Sweet Bean
Sweet Bean is a 2015 Japanese drama film directed by Naomi Kawase. It tells the story of Sentaro, a middle-aged man who runs a dorayaki shop in the outskirts of Tokyo, a job he disdains but cannot leave because he is in debt to a loan shark. His fortunes change dramatically when he hires Tokue, an old lady whose anko – red bean paste – is far superior to factory-made bean paste he had been using. The film was a New York Times “Critic’s Pick”; reviewer Glenn Kenny scored it 90 out of 100, writing, “The movie, beautifully shot and acted, earns its ultimate sense of hope by confronting real heartbreak head-on, and with compassion.”
